Martha Billes is the controlling shareholder of Canadian Tire, one of Canada's most beloved and iconic companies. In June of 2002, Martha was recognized for her entrepreneurial skills and spirit, with Ryerson University's highest degree award, an Honourary Doctor of Commerce. Martha is a passionate advocate for the company her father co-founded over 80 years ago and serves as a Corporate Director, Chairman of the Governance Committee of the Board and Chairman of the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families. It is in her latter role where Martha brings leadership to one of the core values her father infused in Canadian Tire and which thrives in the culture today; community responsibility.
Martha will share her personal journey growing up with "Tire" and her pride in witnessing the growing impact that the Foundation is having on improving the lives of families and children in communities across Canada. Martha will highlight the success of the Foundation's newest success story; Canadian Tire JumpStart is a charitable program of the Foundation for Families that gives financially disadvantaged children a helping hand so that they are able to participate in sport or recreational activities. JumpStart began its life in the Niagara region with a pilot that set the stage for the grassroots community-chapter structure that is the operating model in over 225 locations across Canada today. In its first year, JumpStart assisted almost 25,000 children. Martha will discuss with us why she believes that JumpStart -- and other programs that give children a healthy and educational start to life -- are critical to the future success of Canada. |
