November 15 is National Philanthropy Day

As we reflect on the word philanthropy, there is often a connotation that philanthropy is reserved for the elite. At times it is assumed that being a “philanthropist” is a title given to those with millions of dollars to donate, and though this is often the most publicly recognized form of philanthropy in our community, this assumption excludes the vast majority of those who give in Niagara.

As a community foundation, we represent over 400 fundholders, and we consider each and every one of them philanthropists. Why? Because we believe in an expanded definition of philanthropy. For us, philanthropy is so much more than the number of zeros behind your donation. It’s a mindset and a way of living. As our Director, April Mitchell-Boudreau, said in our latest feature interview, “[philanthropy is] a way of taking care of community. It’s a natural way to operate; to share, to support, and to uplift.” Or as Director Natalie Apparicio-Farrell said, “It means using assets, monetary or otherwise, in a way that ensures that each and every human being has the opportunity to thrive within the community.” Working with these expanded definitions, we believe each and every one of us can be a philanthropist.

Philanthropy is a way of turning intent into impact.

We are proud to be considered Niagara’s philanthropic partner, not because of the number of million dollar donations that we receive, but because no matter the size of donation, we turn the great intention of our fundholders into incredible impact in our community.

Fundholders like, Sharon and Donald SvobTodd and Kerry Shoalts and Tony and Judy Page have invested in NCF so that their intention is turned into impact. Philanthropy like theirs has supported the incredible work of charities like, Heartland ForestMeals on WheelsCrystal Ridge Dream Centre and many many more.

NCF is helping to connect donors with causes and charities with resources. This is philanthropy.

Each and every fundholder under the umbrella of NCF is a philanthropist is Niagara. Please see our Fundholders List, listing all 400 fundholders under our umbrella.
